Lyrics:

God, I'm down here on my knees
Cause it's the last place left to fall
Beggin for another chance
If theres any chance at all
That you might still be listenin
Lovin and forgivin guys like me
I've spent my whole life gettin it all wrong
And I sure could use your help cause from now on

I wanna be a good man
A do like I should man
I wanna be the kind of man the mirror likes to see
I wanna be a strong man
And admit that I was wrong, man
God Im asking you to come change me
To the man I wanna be

There's anyway for her and me to make another start
Could you see what you could do
To put some love back in her heart
Cuz it going to take a miracle
After all I've done to really make her see
That I wanna be a statement
I wanna be a great man
I wanna be the kind of man that she sees in her dreams
God, I wanna be your man
And I wanna be her man
God, I only hope she still believes
In the man I wanna be

Well, I know this late at night that talk is cheap
Lord, don't give up on me
I wanna be a givin man
I wanna really start livin man
God, I'm asking you to come change me
To the man I wanna be

This song makes use of nonverbal communication. It has a nonverbal communication characteristic which is normative and idiosyncratic in interpretation. This song speaks to those who tries to be perfect as a human being or perfect spouse. There are also a few types of nonverbal communication portrayed in this song. Firstly, paralinguistics is one of them. The quality of the voice is very rich and the tone is very serious. There is silence at the beginning of the song which is substituted by the instrumental music of the guitar. Secondly, Chris Young's physical appearance may be judged by the audience. The clothes he wore to perform the song he composed expresses his feelings with his music indirectly. The environment he performs at is also one of the sources of nonverbal communication. The presense of the people there may affect the way he performed.
I feel that this song speaks to people like us who wants to be perfect. It portrays the desire of our hearts and how we end up being in the wrong path. Chris Young displays how he needs God's help to change him to be the man he want to be. He might actually also include how God will change him to the man He wants him to be. However, this also depends on how an individual is willing to let God change him/her to the man/woman He wants him/her to be. This song speaks to everyone differently.
Enjoy! =)

  1. I agree on your view people's choice on whether they want to rely on God to change them. It's human nature to rely on higher power when people are in need and desperation, in this case, God for the believers.

I believe that the purpose of this song by C.Young is that he wants to tell the people especially for the believers that there will be someone for us to look upon and depend on for whatever the situation is, which actually can be anyone. Chris refer this 'someone' as God, as a spiritual reliever.

  2. Nice song you have in here. This song greatly emphasis on " I wanna be", it really shows how determine he is to be the man that he wanted to be. But he cannot change with only his own power, which many believe that this is "Fate".
But i think that the path is the one you ownself who chose it. Whether is it a good path or a bad one, we should stay who we ownself are. I believe that we shouldn't have any regrets in life and stay to believe that there will be another door to lead to happiness.

  3. This song really speaks to many as many people want to be perfect for their spouse. Most of them will look to God and Young's tune and lyrics really depicts what one is thinking deep in their soul.

  4. I feel that this song does not really tell what Chris Young really wants for his life. He only mentioned that he wanted to be a perfect man with God's help. He may want to be clear with his lyrics.

  5. Wow! Using a song as an example for non-verbal communication is a really unique idea!

I think you analysed it quite well. There's a special quality of live performances that entices people more than other mediums like the radio or reccordings. For me, it is because he is closer in proximity, and more 'real' live. Eye contact that the performer gives also counts alot! In this clip, Chris Young kept eye contact with the audience, making him seem like he was truly communicating to them even to those sitting at the far end of the hall.

  6. I think it's a fine attempt to make this blog less technical but yet, interesting and informative enough to bring people back to read newer posts up this blog.

I agree with you that the song lyrics indeed can be interpreted differently by different groups of people from different backgrounds. In fact, this is the same for almost all songs. But perhaps, you may want to find out from the composer himself what this song is meant to be. Not all songs are written to allow for the freedom of interpretation. I am sure there are many songs out there that are written for a specific purpose, to communicate a certain idea, agenda, etc.

  7. I think based on this song sung by Chris Young perhaps does shows that Chris Young might want to change his attitude and behaviour of himself, to make himself as perfect as he can be.

I guess everyone will have a different view about his song, what it meant and such.

  8. Being a singer can actually help one to express himself through songs and also to engage audience to understand his emotions. I felt that this was rather a good post engaging the audience in his song.

  9. You have identified physical appearance that appeals to the audience when the singer steps onto stage. I disagree with that as it is the voice that the audience is listening to and the song that appeals to them

  10. Non verbal communication is often used in songs to depict the expressions and emotions of the singer and song writer. This song is definitely a typical one that portrays it! =)

  12. This is a great song! Non verbal cues are pointed out easily with the eye contact and his expression when he sang the song. I felt that may be you could analyse the song and show what you can interpret from Young's composition.

  13. I thought this was a great way to analyse a song. However, you might want to include the Western culture in it as well, eg. like how culture affects his song.

  14. I feel that physical appearance is the most important factor in any performance. The words of the song will be second and the expression and tone Young used will be third. This song truely expressed his thoughts and appeals to the audience.

  15. I thought this was a good song as the lyrics are really meaningful and it appeals to the audience. I agree with Dickson that physical appearance is the most important factor in any performance. Young did a good job in expressing it all.
